Welding Symbols VT

Service Induce Discontinuities

In welding and nondestructive examination (NDE), VT stands for Visual Testing (or Visual Examination). On a welding symbol chart, VT is typically placed in the tail of the symbol to indicate that a visual inspection is required for that specific joint.
VT in Welding Symbols
The letter designation VT is a part of the standard nondestructive examination symbols defined by the American Welding Society (AWS)
  • Location: It appears in the tail of the welding symbol. If no tail is present, the requirement may be listed in general drawing notes.

  • Purpose: It specifies that the weld must be inspected visually to ensure it meets requirements for size, length, and surface quality (e.g., lack of porosity or undercut).

  • Other NDE Symbols: Similar to VT, you may see other designations like RT (Radiographic), UT (Ultrasonic), MT (Magnetic Particle), or PT (Penetrant Testing).

Basic Welding Symbol Elements
Every welding symbol consists of several key parts that work together to provide complete instructions:
Element Purpose
Reference LineThe horizontal line that acts as the anchor for all other symbols.
ArrowPoints to the specific joint or location where the weld or test is required.
Weld SymbolA small icon (like a triangle for a fillet weld) indicating the weld type.
TailUsed for supplementary information, such as the inspection method (VT) or process (GMAW, SMAW)
